Mary Nell Trautner is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology and is spearheading the development and launch of UB’s College in Prison Program, a BA degree program that offered at a nearby maximum-security prison. She is also the founder and creator of the UB Prison Studies Certificate, an interdisciplinary undergraduate program designed to expose students to a variety of issues related to prisons and incarceration on individual, local, national, and global levels.
She studies how inequality is lived, legitimized, and contested across two primary subfields, sociology of law and sociology of gender. Across both substantive areas, her research illuminates the social processes that make inequality seem natural or inevitable, and identifies the conditions under which such processes are challenged or disrupted.
